Novel phenoxyphenyl alkane sulphonates of the formula wherein X and Y are alike or different and represent halo, CF 3 , C 1-4 alkyl, C 1-4 alkoxy, R is C 1-6 alkyl, m is 0, 1 or 2, n is 0, 1, 2 or 3, are obtained, (1) by reacting, preferably in an organic base solvent at a temperature in the range from 0‹ to 60‹ C., a phenol of the formula with an alkane sulphonyl halide containing from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, or (2) by coupling a bis- (alkanesulphonate) of 2,6-dinitrohydroquinone with an alkoxyphenol (e.g. by refluxing the reactants, preferably in an organic base solvent, for a period from about 1 min. to about 1 hr.), reducing the nitro groups to amino groups by catalytic hydrogenation and replacing the amino groups by halogens via the corresponding bis-diazonium salt and the Sandmeyer reaction. Pharmaceutical compositions useful as hypocholesterolemic and hypotriglyceridemic agents comprise compounds of Formula I combined with solid or liquid pharmaceutical carriers in forms suitable for oral or parenteral administration. |
