A light controller and an imaging apparatus having an enhanced optical function. The light controller comprises a liquid crystal element and a polarizing plate disposed in front of an optical low-pass filter (55b) in the optical path of the imaging apparatus. Furthermore, the polarizing axis (14) of the polarizing plate and the crystal orientation of the liquid crystal element are directed differently from the orientation for separating a normal light beam from an abnormal light beam through the optical low-pass filter (55b). The light controller is applicable to the optical diaphragm of the imaging apparatus, e.g. a CCD camera or a CMOS image sensor.
