A battery comprising a stack of superposed cells is enclosed in a tubular sheath of plastics material having an inner surface adapted to hold the constituent layers of each cell in place and to prevent leakage from one cell to another and a stretched second sheath of a resilient plastics material which exerts a radial and axial pressure on the first sheath and the stack therein as a result of its tendency to revert to its unstretched condition The second sheath may also be deplasticized to cause further shrinkage. The second sheath 11 is stretched by placing one end over the tapered end 9 of the vacuum cup 7 (Fig. 2) and holding it in place by locking ring 10. Application of vacuum at outlet 8 draws the tube which has been dipped in trichlorethylene into the cup and stretches it to conform to the inner wall thereof as shown at 11<SP>1</SP> The battery stack enclosed in the first sheath is then placed in the second sheath and the vacuum is released allowing tube 11 to contract on to the battery. After locking ring 10 has been removed the end of tube 11 is turned over the end of the battery. Evaporation of trichlorethylene causes the tube 11 to contract still more and to grip the battery firmly. |
