A unit comprises a total of 12 needles or six needles in each of a pair of needle beds abutting against each other, one in the front and one in the back. Plural units are deployed along the needle beds, and the first and sixth needles of the front and back beds of each unit are assigned for formation of face stitches, the second and fourth needles of one needle bed and the third and fifth needles of the other bed are assigned for formation of back stitches, and the other needles are assigned as empty needles for alignment of stitches.
