A safe and efficient method of treating wastewater, comprising detecting the mixing of activated sludge inhibitor in wastewater at an early stage and feeding back the detection result to the wastewater treatment operation on a timely basis, wherein the concentration of activated sludge inhibitor in wastewater is measured on the basis of the ratio of BOD measurement value to TOC measurement value (BOD measurement/ TOC measurement) (Vm) in wastewater; and a method of treating wastewater and wastewater treating apparatus wherein when the ratio of this value (Vm) to standard value (Vs) (Vm/Vs) exceeds threshold value (A), a control signal is outputted to the wastewater treating equipment.
