[Classes 70 and 87 (ii).] In apparatus for covering two or more wires by extrusion with a common coating of rubber and then vulcanizing as in the parent case, a differential capstan is used to feed the new reel of wire whenever a reel is exhausted. Wire from the reels 13, 15 is passed round a drum 50, through the extrusion chamber 9 and vulcanizing chamber 16, finally passing to a storage drum 20 round a driven capstan 19. Normally both wires are passed round the part 51 of the drum 50, but the first length from a new reel is run round the larger portion 52 to deliver it through the extrusion and vulcanizing machines at a faster rate than the other wire, thus minimizing the strain on the coating at the section containing only one wire. Hand-operated lever apparatus is provided for confining the wires to the particular sections of the drum desired and for releasing them at will, the natural tendency of both wires being to return to and remain on the part 51. The capstan 19 drives the drum 50 through the strain on the wire. The seal at the end of the vulcanizing chamber comprises rubber discs 22 contacting with the wire and held against the end of the chamber by a member 25 mounted in a screw cap 21 and pressed inwardly by a bel crank 26 actuated by compressed air. The extrusion die 31 and core tube 35 are mounted in a cylindrical bore in a cylinder 39 formed with two unequal flattened surfaces so that it fits one way only into the end of the screw chamber 9. A member 40 engages lugs on both members 31, 35 and positions them within the bore. The core tube has curved directing surfaces towards its forward end and a central fin 36 to assist in the even distribution of the material round the wires. A gasket 34 of soft metal or of asbestos saturated with graphite prevents leakage at the inner end of the vulcanizing chamber.
