Use of a compound (I) that modifies (a) expression of a 'switch gene' (SG) or of a gene (A) that encodes an RNA polymerase II (polII) or (b) the activity of the SG-encoded polypeptide or of polII, for treatment or prevention of tumors. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) method for diagnosing a tumor (or predisposition to it) by detecting, in a patient sample, altered expression of SG or (A) or altered activity of their products; and (2) cell, or mutated or transgenic animal, that is mutated or transgenic with respect to modified SG or (A), or to a gene that alters the expression of such genes.
