A power conveyor (10) having a drive means and a carrier (14) supported for movement along a path of travel parallel (A) to the path of movement provided by the drive means. The carrier has a contact surface (42) adjacent to the drive means that is movable between a first position wherein the contact surface (42) is disengaged from the drive means and a second position wherein the contact surface is frictionally driven by the drive means so as to cause the carrier to move from a first station to a second station along the path of travel provided by the drive means. An actuator (15) is operatively associated with the carrier for causing the contact surface to move between the first position and the second position.
