A sulfurized phenolic resin containing, between phenolic carbon atoms, an organic group represented by the following formula (1): -R<1>-S-R<2>-S-R<1>- (1) (wherein R<1> represents a C2-6 hydrocarbon group and R<2> represents a C1-10 hydrocarbon group); a phenol derivative represented by the following formula (5): (5) (wherein R<5> represents C2-3 alkylene, R<6> represents C1-10 alkylene, and G represents hydrogen, C1-10 alkyl, etc.); and an epoxy resin composition comprising (A) the hardener of the above formula (5) and (B) an epoxy resin as essential ingredients.
