PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader which can accurately detect the position of a carriage with simple constitution. SOLUTION: Both side walls 14a and 14b of a read part 14 are provided with light blocking members 141 corresponding to the start point P3 and the end point P4 of a 2nd document read position and a document size. At both ends of a 1st carriage 50, on the other hand, one each of transmission type photointerrupters 501 and 502 which detect the light blocking members 141 are provided. Consequently, when the 1st carriage 50 moves in a vertical scanning direction, the transmission type photointerrupters 501 and 502 detect the light blocking members 141. Consequently, the position of the 1st carriage 50 is accurately detected. The position of the 1st carriage 50 can accurately be detected with the simple constitution. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
