PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an amorphousα-olefin polymer which solves problems such as stickiness and dissolution into an organic solvent and exhibits high resin-modifying ability, as well as to provide a manufacturing method therefor. SOLUTION: Theα-olefin polymer is an amorphous polymer obtained from a 5-20C branchedα-olefin or an 8-20C linearα-olefin, (a) which has a weight average mol.wt. (Mw) measured by GPC of 300,000 or more in terms of polystyrene and a ratio (Mw/Mn) of the weight average mol.wt. to the number average mol.wt. (Mn) of 1.5-3.0 and (b) in which the proportion of hetero-bonds among theα-olefin monomer (head-head bonds or tail-tail bonds), measured by<SP>13</SP>C-NMR, is 30 mol% or more. Theα-olefin polymer is manufactured with a catalyst for olefin polymerization which comprises a transition metal compound (A) (formula 1), an organic metal compound (B), and a compound (C) which forms an ion pair by reacting with the transition metal compound (A).
