PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electrolyzer which enables the energy-saving by extremely lowering an electrolytic voltage in a fused salt electrolysis process of obtaining chlorine and zinc from zinc chloride incidentally produced on the production of silicon according to the zinc reduction method of silicon tetrachloride. SOLUTION: In order to obtain a small value of electrolytic voltage, it is necessary to remarkably reduce the distance between the anode and the cathode because the electric resistance of fused zinc chloride is extremely large. The anode and the cathode which are arranged parallel are inclined in such a manner that the surface of the anode faces downward and the surface of the cathode faces upward, chlorine gas produced by electrolysis which is lighter than an electrolyte by far is moved upward along the downward-facing surface of electrode and the produced zinc having a large specific gravity is moved downward along the upward-facing surface of electrode. Therein, it is made possible to prevent the produced chlorine from being brought into contact with the zinc and from reacting with the zinc even when the inter- electrode distance is made small extremely and even when electrolysis is performed with no barrier membrane. Thereby, the electrolyzer which has a simple structure, has a minimum electrolytic voltage and is easy for handling can be obtained. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
