PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To shorten the time required for returning to steady state running, and ensure a smooth acceleration feel. SOLUTION: In torque control of an engine, if deceleration of a vehicle is determined (Step 130: YES), driving force required in the vehicle is computed as required driving force F from a vehicle speed detected by a vehicle speed sensor and a running resistance of the vehicle (Step 140). Actual driving force generated in the vehicle is then computed as actual driving force Fcurrnt from a change in the vehicle speed (Step 150). A deviationΔF between both driving forces F and Fcurrnt is computed (Step 160), and required torque Topt required in the engine to bring the deviationΔF at zero or to bring the actual driving force Fcurrnt at the required driving force F is computed (Step 180).
