PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a melting process which may provide a non-ferrous metal product with an excellent yield and quality, without spraying flux on a molten metal surface, even in air. SOLUTION: In the process for melting the non-ferrous metal, hollow articles 3 made of a material having a melting point higher than that of the non-ferrous metal are floated or dipped near the surface of the molten metal to cover the molten metal 2 formed by melting the non-ferrous metal inside a vessel 1. Preferably, the hollow articles and the vessel are made of a same material. Preferably, the non-ferrous metal is magnesium or a magnesium alloy. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
