PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a technique for simply and efficiently converting two aromatic rings bound with aσbond having wide substituents into a condensed ring, and to provide a method for producing a conjugated polycyclic compound. SOLUTION: The method for producing the conjugated polycyclic compound is carried out as follows. A bicyclic compound represented by formula (2) (wherein, B<SP>1</SP>ring and B<SP>2</SP>ring denote each a 5- to a 10-membered aromatic ring; and X<SP>1</SP>, X<SP>2</SP>, X<SP>3</SP>and X<SP>4</SP>denote each a leaving group) is reacted with an alkyne represented by formula (3) (wherein, A<SP>1</SP>and A<SP>2</SP>are each the same or different and denote each a hydrogen atom, a hydrocarbon group or the like) in the presence of an alkyllithium and a chromium halide to produce a tricyclic compound represented by formula (1).
