<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To multiply modulate a plurality of data signals into optical signals of codes effective to a signal-to-noise ratio, a non-linear optical effect, group velocity dispersion, or the like by utilizing an interference type light modulator. <P>SOLUTION: One interference type light modulator is provided with a plurality of modulation electrodes, and a plurality of data signals are converted to those of a RZ (return-to-zero) code, a phase modulated code, a CS code, or the like, and are multiplexed at the same time, thereby decreasing the number of the light modulators and optical loss.
