A textile softening agent comprises a salt of a surface-active ammonium compound and a cationic optical brightener of the formula: where X represents -SO 2 NH 2 , -SO 2 R, -SO 2 OR, -COOR, -CONH 2 , -CN, -CF 3 , halogen, OR or R; X' represents halogen, OR or R; Y represents: or Y' represents H, R or an unsubstituted phenyl radical; Z represents H or Y; Z' represents H or R; R represents a C 1-4 alkyl radical; R' represents H or R; R" represents R or -(CH 2 ) n-1 CH 2 OH; n is 2, 3 or 4; and A- is an anion of an acid. The proportion by weight of brightener to ammonium compound may be 25:75 to 0.5:99.5. The agent may be used as an aqueous dispersion containing 3-15% by weight of the ammonium compound. The agent may also comprise dyestuffs, preservatives, perfumes and stabilising agents. |
