PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a common rail type fuel injection system that can prevent degradation in engine performance and reduction in reliability of a supply pump 2 caused by an abnormal rise in return back pressure of fuel returning from control chambers of injectors 4 to return piping 14, 15 and 17. SOLUTION: If an abnormal rise is detected in return back pressure of fuel returning from control chambers of the injectors 4 to the return piping 14, 15 and 17, a full Q guard is executed to limit a command injection quantity to a given value or less and reduce a pilot injection quantity and a main injection quantity as well. In the state, the injection quantity of fuel that the injectors 4 supply by injection to engine cylinders can be reduced below a conventional level to reduce unburnt gas in engine exhaust gas, reduce black smoke concentration (smoke emission quantity) and improve engine exhaust gas performance.
