Composition for the treatment of alcohol and smoking withdrawal

The use of alpha-keto-glutaric acid (I) and 5-hydroxymethyl-furfural (II) (preferably in a weight ratio of 2-12:1) is claimed in the production of a composition (A) for inhibiting smoking and alcohol consumption. An Independent claim is included for a drink (A') (preferably of pH 4-5) containing (per liter) 4-8 g (I), 0.2-6.0 g (II), 20-40 g sucrose, 2.5-5 g sodium bicarbonate, 0.3-0.8 g sorbic acid and optionally up to 0.5 g citric acid.
