PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a large-size preform for an optical fiber, in which the degree of eccentricity of a core is small. SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing the preform for the optical fiber, including a process for depositing glass fine particles being formed into a clad on the outer peripheral surface of a target rod 1 while holding the both ends of the target rod 1 with a pair of holding parts 2, 3 provided in a glass fine particle depositing apparatus and rotating the target rod 1, the holding part 2 holds one end of the target rod 1 so that its rotation center 2a coincides with the center of the target rod 1 and the deviation amount D of the position of the center of the other end of the target rod 1 from the rotation center 3a of the holding part 3 becomes≤0.2% of the length of the target rod 1 when the other end of the target rod 1 is made free, and the holding part 3 also holds the other end of the target rod 1 similarly.
