PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low-cost and high-definition display medium which is in simple cell structure and can change display colors by simple matrix driving. SOLUTION: The electrophoresis display is structured by sandwiching microcapsules 4 including insulating liquid 1 and dispersed liquid 3 containing electrophoretic particles 2 having electric charges of the same polarity between a 1st substrate 5 and a 2nd substrate 6 and equipped with 1st and 2nd electrodes 7 and 8 which are disposed nearby the microcapsules 4 and arranged on the side of the 1st substrate in parallel to each other and a 3rd electrode 9 which is provided nearby the 2nd substrate 6 and has its length crossing the 1st and 2nd electrodes 7 and 8 at right angles. The microcapsules 4 are arranged in the closest state on a two-dimensional plane, so the display area increases to improve the contrast. As an embodiment of the present invention, a low-cost display medium can be provided since display colors can be changed by simple matrix driving. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
