[Also in Division F2] A furnace wall or roof or a panel forming part of such, comprises an outer steel support plate 10 to which one or more layers 22-25 of refractory insulating material are connected by pins 12 formed at least partly of ceramic material, which extend out through the "hot" surface of the layers and are provided with abutment means to retain the insulating layers in position. The abutment means may comprise a ceramic washer 19, backed by lugs 18, 18<SP>1</SP> formed on the pin to provide a bayonet type connection, or backed by a ceramic nut (Fig. 4, not shown) or a pin head portion (Fig. 3, not shown). The pin is secured to the steel plate by a threaded nut (Figs. 3 and 4, not shown) or when partly formed of metal it may be welded, as at 15, to the plate, the metal and ceramic pin portions 13, 14 respectively being threadedly interconnected. The refractory insulating material is preferably formed as a flexible layer of alumina and silica fibres backed with glass or mineral wool, but may comprise a conventional dense refractory drilled to receive the pins. The ceramic portions of the pins are made of alumina, mullite, bonded fused aluminium oxide, spinels, synthetic sapphire, magnesia, zircon, zirconia or silicon carbide. |
