In a shop or a room in a shop including units 2, e.g. counters, tables, storage cabinets, display cabinets or cases, racks, cupboards and shelf units, an air cooling system supplies cooled air to outlets in the surfaces of the units, to create a cool air zone in the room up to at least head height. In the form shown, at least one air cooling device is located beneath each counter 2. Each device operates with a halogenated hydrocarbon or ammonia refrigerant and includes a fan which drives room air over a condenser and through pipes 4 to an upper zone of the room, and two fans which draw air over an evaporator and deliver the cooled air at low velocity to slots arranged around the edge of the counter. Thermostatically controlled valves adjust the proportions of a mixture of cooled and room air which is delivered to the slots. Water condensed by the evaporator is collected in a drip tray, passed over the condenser to evaporate some of the water, and re-collected. Warm air is extracted from the room through slots around lamps 7 and a ceiling duct 8 by a fan 9 and used to form an air curtain over a doorway 11. A heat exchanger 10 extracts heat from the duct 8, to heat an air preheater 15. Air drawn into duct 8 is replaced by fresh air drawn through a filter 19, fine filter 20 and preheater 15 and passed into the room at one or more points 21a, or through slots in the walls near the floor. In another embodiment, cooled air is supplied through floor ducts to each unit 2 from a central air conditioning plant including a mixing chamber for fresh air and air drawn from the duct 8, a filter, preheater 15, a cooler, a humidifier, a reheater and a fan. An air delivery duct provided along the edge of the counter may include a grille to ensure even air distribution. Slots may be provided between adjacent compartments of a counter, all fed from a single duct. Alternatively, outlets may be provided in the sides of racks or counters, and may be covered with perforated sheet material or woven material. |
