PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a color image forming apparatus in which the occurrence of transfer return due to the return of toner to a photoreceptor drum again in transferring a toner image to a recording medium is prevented. SOLUTION: The color image forming apparatus possesses a monochromatic image forming unit provided with N image carriers and a transfer means and forms an overlapped color toner image by successively transferring the monochromatic toner images of N colors formed on the image carriers to the recording medium by using the transfer means. Before starting the transfer of the monochromatic toner images of second to Nth colors, the electric charge of a polarity identical with the polarity of normal electrified toner is imparted to the recording medium on which the monochromatic toner image or the overlapped color toner image is formed by transferring the monochromatic toner images of first to (N-1)th colors to the recording medium by (N-1) toner image electrifying means disposed on an upstream side in the advancing direction of the recording medium from respective transfer areas.
