PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an internal failure of a linear member with good accuracy. SOLUTION: A detection wave is caused to enter from the circumference side of the linear member, the reflected wave is received, and a reflected wave signal reflected by an internal failure is extracted from the reflected wave. A designated section R is set along the axial direction of the linear member, and a plurality of sub-sections constituting the designated section are set. The maximum value of a reflected wave signal from the internal failure in each sub-section is taken as a representative value. The existence/absence of the internal failure is determined depending on the size of an integrated related value which is the addition of rank values of the representative values in the designated section. The designated section is moved in units of sub-section along the axial direction of the linear member. Thus, the internal failures are measured extending over the whole of the linear member.
