PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid having the following characteristics: the surface is highly and permanently hydrophilic, the surface is composed of separated hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts, the surface has etching resistance, and the like; and to provide a production method for the same having the above- mentioned surface characteristics. SOLUTION: The solid with the polymer chain-modified surface, is obtained by grafting a polymer chain containing a constitutional unit based on anα,β-unsaturated monomer (a) having an organic group (a1) represented by formula (1), through a polymerization-initiating group introduced into the polymer surface (in formula (1), R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>and R<SP>3</SP>are each hydrogen atom or a 1-18C organic group; R<SP>4</SP>is a 1-18C organic group, and R<SP>3</SP>and R<SP>4</SP>may be bonded to each other to form a heterocyclic ring containing Y as a hetero atom; and Y is oxygen or sulfur atom).
