PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a photopolymerization initiator and a photocurable composition containing the initiator that can be used for forming a thick coating film by improving its photosensitivity and also solves the problem of discoloration. SOLUTION: The photopolymerization initiator is aβ-diketone compound or aβ-ketoester compound with a molecular weight of≤1,000. The compound has an electron-withdrawing group or a 1-8C alkyl group at theαposition of theβ-dicarbonyl structure and contains a structure as represented by formula (2) in the compound in an amount of 17-54% by mass.
