PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing an optical fiber preform, by which the deposition amount of glass fine particles in the circumferential direction can be made extremely uniform and the degree of eccentricity of the core of the optical fiber can be suppressed to be small when the glass fine particles are deposited on the outer surface. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the optical fiber preform by depositing glass fine particles on the outer peripheral of a rod-shaped starting material 1 while rotating the starting material 1 around its axis, the amplitude of the starting material 1 is measured when the starting material 1 is rotated around its axis in such a state that one end of the starting material 1 is held with a first rotating chuck 2 prior to the deposition of the glass fine particles, and the starting material 1 is attached so that the whirling amplitude becomes not higher than a prescribe value. Thereby, the rotation with whirling of the starting material 1 is suppressed and the deposition amount of glass fine particles in the circumferential direction can be made extremely uniform.
