<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain excellent contrast in a reflective mode with a wide viewing angle and to obtain a color display with which difference of display quality between transmissive and reflective mode displays is small and which is excellent in both modes in carrying out the color display. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display with a liquid crystal layer 4 held between an upper substrate 3 and a lower substrate 2 placed opposite to each other, is provided with an upper polarizing layer 13 and a lower reflection polarizing layer 6 formed by laminating dielectric interference films on the upper and lower sides of the liquid crystal layer 4. The lower reflection polarizing layer 6 is formed by laminating the prism shaped dielectric interference films, having a plurality of pairs of slope parts with wedge shaped cross-sectional profiles continuously formed.
