PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To optimize an ignition timing in a combustion chamber irrespective of changing of a cam. SOLUTION: A variable valve system of an internal combustion engine has a first cam which uses the lift/operating angle of an intake valve as predetermined large lift/large operating angle, and a second cam which uses the lift/ operating angle of the intake valve as predetermined small lift/small operating angle. The variable valve system performs the switch of the first cam and the second cam according to an engine load an engine rotation speed and changes the lift/operating angle of the intake valve. When switching to the second cam from the first cam, the amount of the intake air of the engine before and after switching of the cam is adjusted so that it may become approximately equal, and the ignition timing A in the combustion chamber after switching to the second cam is made to advance more than the ignition timing B in the combustion chamber at the time of using the first cam.
