PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printer adapted to decrease the velocity of a carriage means to a safe velocity or stop the carriage means by a simple circuit constitution so as to particularly prevent a printer from being damaged even when a carriage becomes out of control because of some trouble in relation to the printer for printing image information by a printing means, and a control method for a printer. SOLUTION: The printer has a position detecting means which is set at least at one position of a home position as an operation basic point of the carriage means, a capping position and a cleaning position and can detect at least that the carriage means stops and passes, and a driving control means for controlling at least driving of the carriage means. When the position detecting means detects that the carriage means passes, the driving control means controls to apply a quick brake to stop the operation of the carriage means. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
