PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydrothermal reaction method which can solve problems that oxidation is inhibited, a large quantity of an oxidizing agent is required, and that a long retention time is required in the case of treatment of an object liquid containing a reducing substance by hydrothermal reaction and which can carry out the treatment efficiently at a low cost; and to provide an apparatus for the method. SOLUTION: The reducing substance in the object liquid to be treated is oxidized and decomposed by supplying an oxygen-containing gas from an oxygen-containing gas supply line 15, and blowing the gas to an object liquid tank 2 from a gas blowing pipe 14. The oxidized liquid (the liquid in the tank) is sent to a supply apparatus 6 by a high pressure pump P1 from an object liquid supply line 13, and an oxidizing agent and auxiliary fuel are supplied from an oxidizing agent tank 3 and an auxiliary fuel tank 4, respectively, to the supply apparatus 6. In the supply apparatus 6, they are mixed and the mixed current is supplied downward to a reactor 7 to carry out hydrothermal reaction. The reacted fluid in the reactor 7 is cooled by a cooler 8 and subjected to a gas liquid separation by a gas liquid separation apparatus 9.
