PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a novel method for treating paper-making sludge and a method for effectively utilizing a by-product generated therefrom as a humidity conditioning material. SOLUTION: In the method for treating the paper-making sludge, the paper- making sludge containing silica is sufficiently blended with an alkaline metal hydroxide aqueous solution so that solid weight ratio of silica to alkaline metal hydroxide is 100:15 to 100:60, obtained mixture is dried by heating at 100 to 250°C and is calcined at 300 to 900°C, if necessary. In this case, ash obtained by calcining the paper-making sludge can be used instead of the paper-making sludge. An alkali silicate solid obtained by this treating method is useful as the humidity conditioning material. COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
