1278425 Unsaturated polyesters DR BECK & CO AG 25 July 1969 [8 Aug 1968] 37501/69 Headings C3P and C3R Unsaturated polyesters are produced by reacting one or more dicarboxylic acids or anhydrides with one or more alkylene oxides in the presence of at least one alpha-beta unsaturated dicarboxylic acid or its anhydride and more than 5 wt. per cent, based on the reaction mixture, of tetrabromophthalic acid or its anhydride, the reaction being conducted in the presence of at least one initiator and at least one tertiary amine as catalyst. Suitably, one or more phosphoric, phosphorous or phosphonic acids or esters are added to the reaction mixture. Reactants specified are: unsaturated acids-maleic and fumaric; other acids-phthalic, tetrahydrophthalic, hexahydrophthalic, tetrachlorophthalic, endomethylene-tetrahydrophthalic, methyltetrahydrophthalic, naphthalic, and glutaric; epoxides-ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and butylene oxide, glycidyl ethers and esters; initiators-neopentyl glycol. The polyesters may be dissolved in a copolymerizable unsaturated monomer, e.g. styrene, to form moulding compositions. The examples describe gelling with 30% styrene, 2% methylethyl ketone peroxide in a 50% solution in dimethylphthalate, and 2% of a 7% solution of cobalt octoate in styrene at 25‹ C. |
