PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a coating apparatus wherein the quantity of a coating material to be coated is stabilized by forming fine projecting and recessed parts and flat parts on a transfer roll body to give uniform pressing force, thereby the covering force is increased and the coating unevenness hardly occurs, and a transfer roll therefor. SOLUTION: In the coating apparatus for applying the coating material on a plate body by falling down the coating material from the upper side on the contact surface of a doctor roll 1 with the transfer roll 2, bringing an emboss roll 4 into contact with the lower part of the transfer roll 2 and pressing the emboss roll on which the coating material is transferred by the transfer roll to the plate body, the transfer roll having flat parts 8, 8 formed on both sides at the end sides of the surface 7 of the transfer roll body and the fine projecting and recessed parts 9 formed between the flat parts is arranged, and an emboss pattern 14 is formed on the plate body 5 such as a building plate such as a cement plate, a woody cement plate and a fiber plate simultaneously with a time when the coating is carried out.
