PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To generate a large damping force and provide high follow-up performance. SOLUTION: This automatic tensioner is provided with a base 2 having a base section 2a and a core section 2b, and a rocking arm 4 having a boss section 4a to be rotatably, inserted into the core section 2b, a pulley 6, around which a transmission belt 7 is belted so as to be rocked around the core section 2b, a twist coil spring 9, which is arranged around the boss section 4a for giving twist restoring force in the return rocking direction, and a friction material 12, which internally contacts the rocking arm 4 supported around a fulcrum 13 on the base section 2a. When the automatic tensioner is rocked in the advance rocking direction, a force works to rock the friction material 12 around the fulcrum 13 in the direction to increase the friction force working between the rocking arm 4 and the friction material 12, and when the automatic tensioner is rocked in the return rocking direction, a force works to rock the friction material 12 around the fulcrum 13 in the direction to decrease the friction force.
