PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader for suppressing troubles in a read image which are caused by fluctuations in a light quantity, due to heat generated from an exposure quantity lamp. SOLUTION: In the image reader, an original placed on an original platen is exposed by an exposure apparatus, and is read by using a photoelectric conversion element for converting the reflected light of the original into an electrical signal. In this image reader, after power is turned on, a white reference plate provided in the image reader is read out by the photoelectric conversion element before reading the image, and the gain of an amplifier is adjusted so that the level of the read image signal reaches a prescribed level. A storage device 47 for holding the level of the read image signal, after being adjusted is provided, and a state of the lamp before reading the image is decided, i.e., the lamp is whether in a state of the lamp being warmed with the light quantity reduced or in a state of the lamp being cold that the light quantity is increased, on the basis of the size of the image data at reading of the white plate.
