PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a water-based coating material for a metallic packaging material containing a carboxy-containing aromatic polyester as the resin component and, nevertheless, achieving the formation of the water-based coating material and high stability, having remarkably improved curability and retort resistance and further improved adhesive properties and processibility. SOLUTION: The water-based coating material for a metallic packaging material having excellent curability and retort resistance is composed mainly of a carboxy-containing aromatic polyester resin as the carboxy-containing polyester resin and having an acid value (AV) of 10-30 mgKOH/g and a number- average molecular weight (Mn) of 3,000-10,000 in combination with a curing agent, a neutralizing agent for the polyester resin and a cosolvent.
