PURPOSE: An Internet phone switching apparatus having gateway function is provided to achieve an improved use convenience by allowing users to utilize telephonic communication service over the Internet through a general telephone set. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a sound card interface unit(201) for connection between a personal computer(PC) and a sound card; a PC interface unit(204) for data communication with PC; a telephone set interface unit(212) for connection to a general telephone set including a ring generator, a power supply unit and a hook state detection unit; a local line interface unit(213) for connection of local line, and which includes a ring detector and a line connection switch; a DTMF signal detector(12) for decoding DTMF signals generated from the telephone set, local line or the sound card; a DTMF signal generator(16) for generating DTMF signals; a call progress tone decoder(17) for sensing call progress tone; a switch unit(207) for connecting the sound car interface unit, telephone set interface unit, local line interface unit, DTMF signal detector, DTMF signal generator and the call progress tone decoder; a voice recording/reproducing unit(13); and a control unit(210) for sensing DTMF code output from a calling part, controlling the switch unit to connect communication line if the sensed DTMF code is a communication line set code, controlling DTMF signal generator to generate corresponding DTMF signal and transmit the signal over a local line if the sensed DTMF code is a telephone number or IP address of the receiving party, when the set mode is a normal mode. The control unit allows the calling part to hear voice message if the set mode is an automatic answering mode, senses DTMF code generated from the calling party, controls the DTMF signal generator to generate the corresponding DTMF signal and transmit the signal over a local line, or transmit data corresponding to the DTMF code to PC through the PC interface unit, if the sensed DTMF code is a telephone number or IP address of the receiving party.
