PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium showing less change in still durability with time which hardly wears and stains a head. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium comprises a magnetic layer, which contains ferromagnetic powder and a binder resin, formed on a nonmagnetic base. Further, the magnetic layer contains an abrasive and a fatty acid ester. In this case, for the abrasive existing in the surface of the magnetic layer, equation 0.01≤H<SB>15</SB>/H<SB>10</SB>≤0.20 is satisfied (wherein, H<SB>10</SB>is the number of projections which are less than 10 nm in height from the surface of the magnetic layer per unit square (piece/μm<SP>2</SP>) and H<SB>15</SB>is the number of abrasives which are at least 15 nm in height from the surface of the magnetic layer per unit square (piece/μm<SP>2</SP>)), and the fatty acid ester is an fatty acid alkyl ester whose acid hydrolysis rate is at most 0.030 (1/hr).
