PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To be immune to snow, water, oil, soil, and garbage when detecting a vehicle, and to facilitate maintenance of components. SOLUTION: A vehicle detector is used which comprises an index part 3, a light condensing part 1, and a signal processing part 2. The index part 3 includes a pattern and extends toward the upper part of a roadside of a road surface 10. The light condensing part 1 is opposed to the index part 3 across the road surface 10, and receives a scattered light 6 from the index part 3, and then outputs a reception light data 9. The signal processing part 2 judges that a vehicle 11 is present on the road surface 10 when a part of the scattered light 6 disappears based on the reception light data 9. The light condensing part 1 is provided with a reflecting part 5 and a light receiving part 4. The reflecting part 5 receives the scattered light 6 which is parallel to the road surface 10, and reflects it as a reflection light 8 in a prescribed direction.
