<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain satisfactory visual angle characteristics without increasing manufacturing costs. <P>SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element is provided with: first and second electrode substrates AR, CT; a liquid crystal layer 7 on which nematic liquid crystal molecules are arranged approximately in parallel with the substrates AR, CT without twist and which is held between the electrode substrates AR, CT; first and second optically anisotropic elements 13, 3 arranged respectively on the electrode substrates AR, CT on the opposite side of the liquid crystal layer 7; first and second half-wave plates 14, 2 respectively arranged on the optically anisotropic elements 13, 3; and first and second polarization plates 15, 1 respectively arranged on the half-wave plates 14, 2. In particular, the electrode substrate AR comprises a light transmission part 9 for transmitting back light made incident from the polarization plate 15 and a light reflection part 8 for reflecting ambient light made incident from the side of the polarization plate 1.
