<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the number of manufacturing steps for forming a scattering and reflecting means for scattering and reflecting external light in a reflection type liquid crystal display device. <P>SOLUTION: A supporting layer 26 consisting of resin and having a flat surface is provided on the inner surface of the rear surface side substrate 23 of a liquid crystal cell 21. A number of particles 27 consisting of silica, resin and the like are buried in the supporting layer 26 so that a part of each particle is protruded from the surface of the supporting layer 26. The surface of the supporting layer 26 including the particles 27 is a rugged surface. A scattering and reflecting layer 28 having a rugged surface following the rugged surface of the supporting layer is provided on the rugged surface of the supporting layer. The scattering and reflecting means can be easily formed only by applying a resin layer for forming the supporting layer 26 on the inner surface of the rear surface side substrate 23, scattering a number of the particles 27 thereon, curing the resin layer to form the supporting layer and forming the scattering and reflecting layer 28 by a sputtering method or the like.
