PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for retracting a survival path of trellis code data are provided to meet positively an external factor such as the degradation of a channel by changing the threshold time in a retracing process of the survival path. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for retracting a survival path of trellis code data includes a storage and trace portion(60), a detection portion(61), and a threshold time control portion(62). The storage and trace portion(60) stores the survival path information and retraces the survival path during the predetermined threshold time. The detection portion(61) detects the converged survival path in response to a traced result of the storage and trace portion(60). The threshold time control portion(62) sets up the optimum threshold time in a retracing process of the survival path by changing the threshold time according to a state of convergence.
