PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a control device for a vehicle capable of suppressing a rise of the battery temperature in association with the charge and discharge of a battery and thereby increasing the chance of engine stop. SOLUTION: An electronic control unit (ECU) of this vehicle control device stops automatically the engine mounted in the vehicle when the automatic stopping conditions are met, including the condition that the temperature of the high voltage battery is lower than the upper limit value (Steps 110 and 120) and drives an auxiliary unit with the power supplied from the high voltage battery. When the automatically stopped time t of the engine has attained the specified limit time t0 (Step 180: YES), the ECU puts the engine automatically stopped in an automatic start with the power supplied from the battery (Step 190). After the automatic start, power generation is made in compliance with the vehicle running condition and the battery is charged. Further the ECU changes the limit time t0 in accordance with the battery temperature T sensed by a battery temperature sensor (Steps 130 and 140). COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO
