A moulding material contains: (a) as a binder 5-30% of its weight of an aqueous dispersion of a polymer comprising at least 50% by weight (with reference to the weight of the polymer) of units of an ester of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid with an alkanol (C 4 - C 14 ); (b) 10-90% of its weight of an elastomeric polymer; (c) 5-200% (with reference to the weight of the binder (a)) of cement and/or slaked lime); and (d) 0-74¥% of its weight ofmineral filler. The aqueous dispersion (a) of a polymer may consist exclusively of units of one or more esters of acrylic or methacrylic acid with an alkanol (C 4 -C 14 ). Suitable acrylic or methacrylic esters are those of n-butanol, npentanol, n-hexanol, 2-ethylhexyl alcohol and dodecyl alcohol. In addition, the polymers used as binders may contain polymerized units of up to 50% of their weight of one or more other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, e.g. vinyl aromatic compounds, other acrylic and methacrylic esters, acrylonitrile, vinyl esters, vinyl ethers, vinyl halides and monoolefins. The polymer may also contain 0À1-7% by weight of one or more polymerized units of ethylenically unsaturated monomers which contain at least one reactive group. The component (a) may also contain conventional emulsifying agents. Component (b) may be natural or synthetic rubber, butyl rubber, tyre rubber waste, polyurethane rubber or polyisobutylene. The elastomeric polymers are added to the moulding material as a powder or in fibrous form. Component (c) may be Portland cement, a high-alumina content cement, a high slag content cement, sulphate-resistant cement, trass cement, slaked lime or quick lime. The mineral fillers (d) maybe stone powder, brick dust, slate powder, heavy spar, slag powder and/or stone chippings.</p> |
