<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin and lightweight liquid crystal display with excellent display quality. <P>SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display has a cut part for arranging a point light source at one or two or more corner parts (α) in rectangular transparent cell substrates (10, 20) forming a liquid crystal cell. The cell substrates has a transparent layer which has a refractivity lower than the substrates and which is provided on the liquid crystal side. Further, on the outside, an optical path control layer (40) is provided and which has an optical path conversion slant surface (Z) that reflects light made incident from the cut part into the cell substrate in the substrate direction. Consequently, liquid crystal displays of transmitting, reflective and semi-transmitting types and a dual purpose type for external light/illumination all with excellent display quality can be constructed which compactly store the point light source, have a small-size and thin structure illumination mechanism that efficiently transmits the incident light from the point light source over the entire substrate and evenly illuminates the liquid crystal by efficiently performing optical path conversion of the transmitted light via the optical path control layer and which have excellent thinness, small weight, brightness and brightness uniformity. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2004,JPO |
