PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To hinder the life of a fixing roller from shortening and to correctly detect the temperature of the fixing roller, in a fixing device which detects the temperature of the fixing roller by a temperature detecting means and controls the supply of power to a heater based upon the result of the detection, thereby maintaining the fixing roller 2 at a temperature suitable for fixing a toner image. SOLUTION: A non-contact temperature detecting means 5 is provided in the paper passage area LA of the fixing roller 2, and a contact type temperature detecting means 6 is provided outside the paper passage area of the fixing roller 2. During the start up of the fixing device 1, the supply of power to the heater 4 is controlled based upon the temperature detected by the contact temperature detecting means 6. After the start up of the fixing device 1, the supply of power to the heater 4 is controlled based upon the temperature detected by the non-contact temperature detecting means 5.
