PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high activity a high-quality polyolefin of low Ti residues with markedly improved power characteristics. SOLUTION: The method for producing the polyolefin comprises polymerizing the corresponding olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising (A) a transition metal compound and (B) an organometallic compound. In the catalyst, the transition metal compound (A) to be used is prepared by the following steps. A homogeneous solution is first prepared by including (i) metallic magnesium and a hydroxylated organic compound, or an oxygen-containing organomagnesium compound, (ii) an oxygen-containing organotitanium compound and (iii) an oxygen-containing organic compound, and (iv) a silicon compound is reacted with the homogeneous solution into a gel-like compound, then (v) the gel-like compound is reacted with such an amount of a halogenated organoaluminum compound that the molar ratio of the aluminum atoms to the magnesium atoms in the gel-like compound is 0.5-2.0 to form solid particles, and (vi) the solid particles are reacted with such an amount of a halogenated organoaluminum compound that the molar ratio of the aluminum atoms to magnesium atoms is 1.0-20 to obtain a solid composite.
