PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system for photographing an image of a wide range, displaying the image on a monitor, and capable of decreasing an update interval of the displayed image. SOLUTION: A memory 30 stores a compressed image comprising (M×N) still pictures photographed by a camera unit 3. A display apparatus 2 displays a panoramic entire image produced from the compressed image stored in the memory 30. When a mouse 36 is used to point out an area desiring of update in the entire image displayed on the display apparatus 2, the camera unit 3 photographs the image at a position corresponding to the pointed out area.
